CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
BLAST.
Hugh knew he had felt happy when heâd had Emma in his arms, and he was certain that sheâd kissed him back, but that happiness had rapidly halted.
Emma had vanished.
Well, sheâd run away, which was hardly an improvement.
He hadnât meant to scare her.
Perhaps sheâd remembered he was courting seven other women.
He sighed and tramped back toward Odysseus. After leaving his horse at the stables, he proceeded to the house.
âBeechmont!â Jasperâs voice boomed through the air, and Hugh turned toward him. âWhere have you been?â
âRiding.â
âWhat nonsense,â Jasper said. âYou donât seem to understand the delights of having beautiful women in your house.â
Hugh gave a wry smile. âAnd what are you doing outside?â
Jasper patted his stomach. âTrying to survive. Iâve eaten so much bread and cheese and jam. Iâve drunk chocolate and tea and coffee.â
âThen people are awake.â
âItâs past midday,â Jasper said. âSurely you know that.â
âOf course,â Hugh said, wondering just how long heâd been out on the grounds with Miss Braunschweig. âI should have been there.â
Jasper shrugged. âI managed it.â He grinned. âBesides, your mother was there too.â
Hugh groaned.
âApparently, she needs to eat too.â
âBut not with everyone!â Hugh moaned, hurrying to the house.
âI stayed as long as I could,â Jasper said. âIt was a valiant effort.â
âDear Lord,â Hugh muttered.
âBesides, not all of them were there. Miss Braunschweig is still sleeping, and Lady Letitia left for a morning walk.â
âProbably to escape your conversation,â Hugh said.
âNonsense.â Jasper grinned. âI am a duke. Donât think it hasnât occurred to those women that I might be converted to the prospect of marriage.â
âAnyone you like?â Hugh asked.
âNaturally not,â Jasper said. âNothing worse than premature marriage. Perhaps Iâll get around to it when Iâm seventy.â
âThatâs a bit old to be fathering children.â
âAh, not when the equipment is perfect.â Jasper pointed downward, and Hugh rolled his eyes.
âOn a more serious note,â Jasper said, âthere really is no excuse for Miss Braunschweigâs absence. If she shows no interest in all of this, she should be sent home.â
âMiss Braunschweig was with me,â Hugh said.
Jasper swerved his head toward him. âTruly?â
âI mean, it was all quite in order,â Hugh clarified. âShe went riding too.â
âArenât you going to go riding later?â Jasper asked. âWith everyone? You could have waited. Itâs not like you to change the plan suddenly.â
âI know,â Hugh said.
Jasper gazed at him. âYou are fond of this chit.â
Hugh refrained from answering. Some expression must have played on his face, for Jasperâs eyes widened.
Jasper grinned. âHugh Beechmont, Marquess of Metcalfe, has emotions. We should send for the doctor. The scientists! Theyâll be shocked.â
âDonât raise your voice,â Hugh said.
âBut then youâve found her. Your mate! Your partner for life! Your future wife!â
âItâs not that simple,â Hugh said.
âBecause youâve committed to this wretched house party?â Jasper asked.
âNot exactly.â Hugh remembered Emma running away from him, with no concern for her dress or her hair.
Miss Braunschweig would simply have to see he was in possession of some good qualities. He would show her.
âI must speak with the grooms,â Hugh said.
âTheyâll have everything prepared,â Jasper said in a soothing tone that made Hugh wonder how upset he looked.
